What is a webhook?

A webhook is an automatic notification that one system sends to another as soon as a specific event occurs — such as “a form was submitted” or “a payment was received”. The receiving system responds to it immediately.

As of 2026Explained briefly

01 — Context

Webhook in detail

The difference from a classic query: instead of checking regularly to see if something has changed, you are actively notified. That's faster, more efficient, and the foundation of most automation chains.

In practice, webhooks are the connecting pieces between systems that otherwise have nothing to do with each other. A booking system reports a new appointment, an automation then creates the contact, sends the confirmation, and adds a reminder.

What this means for small businesses

Context

For businesses, this is not a topic you need to deal with — but it is a term that appears in proposals. Behind it is almost always the sentence: These two systems will now talk directly to each other.

03 — Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you need programming for that?

Not necessarily. Many systems can be connected through automation platforms without writing code.

What happens if the recipient is not reachable?

Good systems retry the attempt. For critical processes, this question should be clarified in advance.
