Google Business Profile: Comparing providers — what really matters
Offers for Google Business Profile are hard to compare because everyone writes something different. The questions that reveal real differences — and the warning signs.
When comparing providers for Google Business Profile, the stated price matters less than the question of what happens afterward: who maintains the system after launch, and what does a later adjustment cost. That's the difference that only shows after a few months.
01 — Criteria
How quotes differ
- What exactly is included. Two quotes with the same total can cover completely different deliverables. Ask for scope as a list, not as running text.
- Who delivers what. Content, images, data, access — if it's not specified, it becomes a point of conflict later.
- What operation costs. Calculated over three years, including licenses, hosting, and support.
- What happens if you want to switch. Do you get access, data, and documentation? The answer to this question says more about a provider than any reference.
- Who actually does the work. With small providers this matters: who sits in the meeting, and who then does it.
02 — Questions
Questions you should ask
- What happens if the project becomes more expensive than estimated — who bears that?
- Who owns data, access, and, if developed, the source code?
- What does operation cost in the second and third year?
- What does the documentation we receive at the end look like?
- How would you measure whether the project was successful?
- Is there a case in which you would advise us against this?
03 — Warning signs
When to be skeptical
- Guaranteed results. Anyone promising top Google ranking or a specific revenue increase is selling something they can't deliver.
- No pushback. A provider who thinks every project is a good idea has either not listened or is only selling.
- Time pressure. Limited-time discounts on project prices are a sales tool, not an offer.
- Unclear ownership. Anyone who won't clearly say who owns data and access doesn't have your interests at heart.
- No contact with technical expertise. If only sales sits in the first meeting, that's where misunderstandings arise.
04 — Scope
What's included
- Set categories correctly — main category and appropriate secondary categories
- Add services and products completely
- Current photos and, where appropriate, a virtual tour
- Opening hours including public holiday rules
- Pre-fill the Q&A section rather than leaving it to chance
- Analysis: which search terms lead to the profile, what happens next
05 — Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do posts in the profile achieve anything?
Little direct ranking effect, but they fill the space in the profile and show activity. For businesses with promotions or events they're worthwhile, for others hardly.
Who is allowed to manage the profile?
Multiple people can be registered as owners or managers, with different permissions. That makes sense so maintenance doesn't depend on a single person with a single login.
What about false or fake reviews?
They can be reported, with varying success. For clear policy violations — insults, mistaken identity, competitors — it often works. For merely unfair criticism, rarely.
What if someone has created a fake profile for our business?
That happens, usually through automated entries from old directories. Ownership can be claimed, and duplicate entries are merged or reported.
How do we get more reviews?
Ask at the right time: immediately after completing the service, with a short link, without offering anything in return. Bought reviews violate the guidelines and can be detected.
What is the most important setting in the profile?
The primary category. It determines which search queries you're even eligible for. A business listed as “construction company” instead of “plumber” appears for the wrong search — or for none at all.
Is a video in the profile worthwhile?
As a supplement yes, as a replacement for photos no. A short tour or workshop view builds trust, but doesn't replace the complete, current still images that most viewers see first.
